EXPLANATION: Move the segments of the triangle in the top right and bottom left quadrants to the corresponding empty spaces in the top left quadrant and you will see that the area is 1.5 square units. See the image below: The puzzle can of course be solved mathematically by beginning with the area of the 2 x 2 square (4 square units) and subtracting the area of the three white triangle segments. The area of a triangle is (base x height) / 2 so the two large white triangle segments have an area of 1 square unit and the small white triangle segment has an area of 0.5 square units. The area of the orange triangle is therefore: 4 - 1 - 1 - 0.5 = 1.5 square units.
