The puzzle can of course be solved mathematically by beginning with the area of the 2 x 2 square (4 square
units) and subtracting the area of the three white triangle segments. The area of a triangle is
(base x height) / 2 so the two large white triangle segments have an area of 1 square unit and
the small white triangle segment has an area of 0.5 square units. The area of the orange triangle is
therefore: 4 - 1 - 1 - 0.5 = 1.5 square units.
