Puzzle Image Imagine a cardboard circle lying flat on its side on a cutting board. Using five straight vertical cuts (i.e. perpendicular to the cutting board) and without moving/stacking any of the pieces, what is the maximum number of pieces that can be obtained with five cuts? Note: the pieces need not be equal in size.

Reminder, no sneaky stuff:
1) you may NOT cut the cardboard circle horizontally (i.e. parallel to the cutting board).
2) you may NOT stack the pieces on top of each other.
